Integrating PAT into PAS for Continuous Manufacturing in Pharmaceutical Industry

Process Analytics Technology (PAT) has been highly encouraged to use for pharmaceutical production by FDA particularly for real time release and is a critical functional part of continuous manufacturing for both OSD and API manufacturing. However one of the challenges in doing so has been the difficulty in integrating PAT devices into process automation system partially because main types of PAT devices are spectral photometers such as nir or Raman which involve large amount of complicated data and multi-variate data modeling. Different approaches of integrating PAT devices into PAS are being discussed in this speech. A DCS based strategy with OPC UA and MPC capability will be introduced and evaluated for continuous manufacturing for pharmaceuticals.
