Exhibitor Spotlight

INTERPHEX created a quick questionnaire to learn more about SP Scientific. In this exhibitor spotlight, Ian Whitehall, answers our questions.

INTERPHEX: - How has your company evolved into what it is today?
SP Scientific is a synergistic portfolio of leading scientific equipment brands. Beginning with laboratory freeze dryers, as the company’s reputation for offering reliable, high value products, complementary brands with similar reputations were acquired, supported and leveraged to serve an increasingly diverse customer base. Our portfolio of equipment is broad reaching and is designed to provide those working with research and manufacturing unparalleled confidence and control over their processes when utilizing our tools.

INTERPHEX: - Can you describe three aspects that have allowed your company to succeed?
SP Scientific is one of the only organizations with capability to support development and commercialization of parenteral drugs whether liquid or lyophilized for transport and storage from earliest stage development through to full commercialization. Our Line of Sight™ approach to lyophilization, offers a full range of freeze dryers with scalable technologies to provide a data rich environment enabling shortened development time with increased quality and improved risk management. PennTech aseptic processing equipment provides end to end manufacturing capabilities.
Investment in lyophilization technologies and supporting thought leaders has been vital to our success and we remain committed to supporting future development and sharing industry best practices and developments through our educational programs and portals.

INTERPHEX: - What is the biggest challenge in your industry?
Increased development of biologic drugs and specialized medicines is a challenge and an opportunity. Production batches will be smaller, API’s are expensive to manufacture.  Further there is an on-going desire to shorten time to market while maintaining quality and driving yield. Technologies such as SP. Scientific’s ControLyo Nucleation Technology, LyoFlux and SMART cycle development have the potential to provide real benefits to manufacturers, healthcare providers and ultimately the patient.

INTERPHEX: - Where do you see the industry going in the next 10 years?
As part of an overall initiative to remove people from the process, the industry has a growing interest in non-contact measurement and monitoring of the lyophilization process. Traditional Lyo monitoring tools do not necessarily lend themselves well to automation but new wireless temperature sensors and Lyoflux
TDLAS (Tunable diode laser adsorption spectroscopy) for which SP partners with Physical Sciences Inc.  provides accurate measurement of the mass flow of vapor leaving the product chamber. This mass flow measurement allows the inference of many critical data points of the product, such as end points, ice temperature and mapping of the design space for a given formulation.

INTERPHEX: - What don't most people realize about you or your company?
Our full breadth and reach. SP Scientific is one division of SP Industries and is complemented by SP Scienceware offering a variety of lab apparatus and glassware under our Bel-Art, H-B Instrument and Wilmad-LabGlass brands. We are a world leader in NMR and EPR, sterile sampling tools and magnetic stirring bars as well as offering one of the largest selections of thermometry and hydrometer products, desiccators and more.

INTERPHEX: - What are you looking forward to at INTERPHEX this year?
We are presenting a Technical Presentation on Tuesday in Theatre 5 on our Line of Sight approach to lyophilization. Interphex 2019 will be the launch of Line of Sight live and it is a great opportunity to showcase the breadth of our offering and personally meet with established and potential customers who can benefit from our tools.
