INTERPHEX 2011 Continues: Next Stop — Puerto Rico

05/09/2011

(NORWALK, Conn., May 9, 2011) – Buoyed by the excitement and increased business at this year’s INTERPHEX 2011 in New York – higher attendance and feedback where 81 percent confirmed the event’s relevancy, 78 percent its networking value, and 76 percent that it addresses their current business needs -- the organizers and supporters of INTERPHEX Puerto Rico who attended flew back with some new business of their own in hand and additional ideas for their upcoming event. This year the show will be held October 20-21, 2011 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center, with the INTERPHEX Medical Device and Latin American Supply Chain events.

During the March 29-31 run of INTERPHEX 2011 in New York, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico was represented by several of its leading industry groups whose members met with exhibitors and attendees and hosted special events. These included:

  • INTERPHEX Puerto Rico 2011;
  • the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company (PRIDCO);
  • INDUNIV, a non-profit consortium supporting Puerto Rico’s science and technology environment through industry, government and academic sector collaboration; and
  • the Puerto Rico Chapter of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers (ISPE).
  • the Puerto Rico Convention Bureau and Puerto Rico Convention Center;

Their busy schedule included a booth on the show floor, a Rums of Puerto Rico reception, live interviews and individual meetings, and a breakfast session where Victor Merced, PRIDCO’s Business Development Officer, Life Sciences delivered an overview of the Commonwealth’s financial, talent and logistics infrastructure that supports the life sciences industry.  Puerto Rico has become the world’s third largest biotech manufacturer and has one of the world’s largest concentrations of pharmaceutical manufacturing operations, producing thirteen of the top twenty drugs sold in the United States.

“The comprehensive economic incentives we offer has helped spur more than $4 billion in new biotech plants that are up and running, even with consolidations,” Merced said. “Our program at INTERPHEX was for some an introduction to the industry’s depth on the island, and for others a confirmation of that depth. We saw an energy at INTERPHEX New York that reflects an industry turning the corner from the turbulent past few years, and a level of interest in us that made us glad we came. We’re looking at INTERPHEX New York as a preview of INTERPHEX Puerto Rico, and we’ll be ready for it.”

“The other thing to remember is that Puerto Rico is also the bridge to both the growing Latin American business world and to working with multinationals,” said Ivan Lugo, Executive Director of INDUNIV. “It’s a good place to do business because there’s the familiarity that comes with a U.S. Territory and the benefits of fiscal autonomy, bilingualism, and good geographical positioning.”

This message was apparently heard by INTERPHEX 2011 exhibitors; INTERPHEX Puerto Rico organizers reported signing up more than 125 companies to date for October, several of which were booked at the New York event.

“Participating in New York this year gave us the opportunity to underscore the scope of ISPE’s partnership with INTERPHEX, which extends to on-the-ground teamwork in Puerto Rico through our ISPE chapter,” said chapter president Ricardo Gutierrez of Control Associates of Puerto Rico, who attended with chapter vice president Fernando Gonzalez of Novartis.  ISPE Puerto Rico was also one of the recipients of an INTERPHEX donation to the organization’s Student Chapter Scholarship Fund, which was presented during the opening night reception.

Now in its eighth year, the INTERPHEX Puerto Rico Conference & Exhibition is the Commonwealth’s largest gathering of life science industry suppliers and related professionals, offering exhibits and technical sessions to provide education and solutions for pharmaceutical and medical device professionals.  In addition to running simultaneously with INTERPHEX Medical Devices and the Latin American Supply Chain, this year’s event will include offerings around “green” buildings, providing facility managers and other interested buyers from pharmaceutical plants access to resources that promote environmental and operational efficiencies.

Last year INTERPHEX Puerto Rico was attended by more than 250 exhibiting companies and 3,800 pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industry professionals within Puerto Rico as well as the greater Caribbean region. Its sponsors include INDUNIV, ISPE and the Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association, and its Advisory Board includes members from CooperVision, Pfizer, Roche Diagnostics, Lilly del Caribe, Stryker, Medtronic, Jacobs, PR Tec, MediSearch, ISPE, PRMA, PRIDCO and INDUNIV.
